Children come in ones and twos, and each needs to be clothed and fed. Inevitably, in larger families, the older daughters would have to play a maternal role vis-à-vis their younger siblings. Soon enough, the older boys will be helping with "male" household duties (chopping wood, cleaning the grate, and the like).
