ranch school

Estancia Cerro Castillo, Última Esperanza
Teacher, pupils and parents, 1951

Most sheep ranches were in isolated locations, and few had sufficient children or resources to warrant establishing a rural primary school: many young children were therefore obliged to board in the city. The families in this photo were fortunate in having their own facilities: here the manager´s children socialized naturally with the sons and daughters of farm labourers.
