In 1896, the Spanish-born entrepreneur José Menéndez founded Estancia Primera Argentina on the south bank of the Río Grande, in Tierra del Fuego. The estancia´s present name was adopted after the founder´s death in 1918. Its 160,000 hectares (550 square miles) stretched from the Atlantic coast right up to the Chilean border, covering rolling plains, high hills and forests, with rivers and numerous lakes in the western part.
