Public Buildings in Southern Patagonia

main square

Punta Arenas
Plaza Muñoz Gamero, c1908?
Following the Spanish colonial tradition, the city plan included a central square, bordered by the main public buildings (cathedral and government administration), and the mansions of the richest citizens. In this early view, note the absence of trees and the monument to Magellan (inaugurated in 1922).
