The weather in these parts makes it impractical to shear sheep out of doors. Furthermore, since the job has to be completed in a matter of weeks, the process was quickly mechanized. This concentrated all activity under a single roof -- the purpose-built shearing shed. The more animals a ranch owned, the larger the building.
