Punta Arenas
Spring Festival, 1926?
Around 21st September each year, the
people of Punta Arenas used to celebrate the arrival of springtime.
This was a well-sponsored event: the mayor's office formed committees,
which included prominent members of the community. Parades were
held in the streets, with decorated floats and costumed marchers;
a Spring Queen was chosen, and prizes were awarded to the best
entrants. Traditionally, the youngest participants (like Graciela
Grace in this photo) wore fancy costumes.
