Kitchen duties, c1943
A labour-intensive life in the outdoors,
and in all weathers, calls for good nourishment. Cooks, usually
men since few women were available, were important members of
the work-group. The large stove (cast-iron, black, fired by wood
or coal) was typical of the period. The men seated at the rear
of the photo are peeling potatoes, a staple food of the region.
