Anglican missionary and Yahgan children, 1898
One practical objective of the Anglican
missionary work was to prepare the remaining groups of Yahgan
natives for western civilization. This was to be carried out through
education, and training in vegetable-gardening and domestic skills.
However, despite the dedicated work, these goals were thwarted
by the extremely high mortality rate of both adults and children.
In the photo, the missionary Mrs. Pringle posed with a group
of young boys and girls, dressed in western clothes. For more
images of this mission, see the Tekenika Album.
