Horse-racing, and the associated cash-betting,
holds a strong appeal for many people. In Patagonia, the richer
enthusiasts could aspire to buy, breed and train their own animals;
and a hippodrome was built in Punta Arenas in 1896. This locally-born
prize-winner was owned by the Punta Alta ranch, in south-western
Santa Cruz province. The horse is still an important element in
