Distances on the largest estancias
were so great that the shepherds were obliged to live close to
their flocks. This was a lonely life, calling for a high degree
of self-reliance, especially for the bachelor, with only a horse
and dogs for company, month after month. Later, with access to
public radio broadcasting, the daily "Messages for the Campo"
became a popular means for employers and families to convey information,
