Calle Ignacio Carrera Pinto (formerly
Ecuatoriana), Punta Arenas
Urban middle-class home, c1930
Most urban housing was wood-built,
clad in tinplate and roofed with corrugated iron. In the cold
climate, coal and/or wood-burning stoves were essential elements
for both cooking and heating. A long "gallery" (behind
the fence in this photo) was a typical feature in the nicest houses:
it was the place for catching the sun and keeping indoor plants.
