Eggs of the ñandú (choique), 1922
The "ostrich" of the southern
pampas, Pterocnemia pennata, has an unusual method of raising
its young. Several females lay their eggs in the same "nest":
these are then brooded by the male parent, which also guards the
chicks after hatching. Such large eggs were a popular human food
source, especially for the indigenous peoples.
