"Ona Indian" postcard (written 1904)

This studio photograph exemplifies the romantic myth of the "noble savage". The young man aiming his bow and arrow is clad discreetly with a short kilt, while a second arrow protrudes from the quiver at his hip. Behind him lies a guanaco skin and perhaps a rocky mound. The backcloth motif of waves or rolling pampa completes the illusion. [More photos of the last native peoples of the region: postcards ; mission]
