Land and marine transportation meet at the port. Early travellers and cargo were ferried ashore in small boats, but eventually deep-water piers and quays were built. Land-side transportation in this photo is by bullock-cart; there seems to be a steam-winch on the quayside, and rails run the length of the pier.
